Natural History

Long before maps and diaries were inked on Spanish galleons, the indigenous people, the Ohlones, sang the name of this place: "Dancing on the brink of the world." For hundreds of years, 40 Ohlone tribelets lived on the coast, each with its own territory, language, and chief. The Spanish explorers called these tribes Costenos - coast people. Later, English-speaking settlers changed the name to Coastanoans; today, many descendants call themselves Ohlones.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Next to the Pacific Ocean itself, Costanoa's most visible landmark is Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Three miles north of Costanoa, this rather distinctive and flashy lighthouse has watched over the sheer cliffs and rocky shore since 1872. Its white tower has weathered shipwrecks, rumrunners, a fire, earthquakes, modern technology and even politics. It now stands as the second tallest lighthouse in the West and one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country.

Pescadero

Ten miles north and east of Costanoa, Pescadero was founded by Portuguese and Spanish settlers, who, knowing it was a favorite fishing spot of the Ohlone indians, named it "Fishing Town." In 1856, pioneers from the east coast came to farm the area, contributing the distinctive New England architecture that still stands today.

Cascade Bar & Grill

The Cascade Bar & Grill recently was awarded a gold medal for local, fresh ingredients and a sustainable produce inventory.

The awards read: "The California State Senate honors and recognizes Cascade Bar & Grill at Coastanoa Lodge & Camp on the occasion of its achievement of the "As Fresh as it Gets" 2008 Gold Award. We commend its dedication to purchase fresh, local sustainable products from San Mateo County, and applaud it exemplary service to our community. We further wish it continued success in all its future endeavors."
